Flooring Maintenance: A Challenge in Extreme Temperatures

Flooring maintenance is not something that most homeowners worry about on a regular basis. Nor should it be. If you initially made an informed choice of flooring based on traffic patterns and environmental hazards in your home, you should be able to go about your ordinary life without too much concern about damage or short-term wear and tear.

However, a household environment is never completely stable, and as changes occur it is appropriate to think about how they might affect flooring maintenance. This applies to family changes such as the birth of a child or the adoption of a pet, and it also applies to changes in the broader environment which might make it more likely for staining or corrosive substances to be tracked onto a delicate flooring type.

Concerns about flooring maintenance can also be raised by changes in the weather from season to season or changes in the climate year after year. As of this writing, much of the United States is undergoing a fairly severe heatwave, and many people are warning that forthcoming summers will only bring more of this sort of discomfort. There are many problems that could arise from that prediction being fulfilled. Problems with flooring maintenance may not be high on the list, but they are on the list all the same.

The current heatwave will pass, and in a market like Columbus, Ohio it will be counterbalanced by a cold snap in what seems like no time. But that fact only reinforces the idea of a heatwave as a challenge for flooring maintenance. Extreme highs and extreme lows in temperature can wreak havoc on many hardwoods and certain other types of flooring by causing expansion, contraction, and buckling. If those extremes can’t be avoided, damage may be inevitable and repairs may become necessary.

Some homeowners might be well-advised to get ahead of that problem by replacing their Columbus-area flooring with something more temperature-resistant from the Fedco Floor Services catalog. Others might choose to consult with experts about the ideal conditions for flooring maintenance and take steps to weatherize their homes or install humidity control systems to minimize damage while also maximizing comfort.

Still, other homeowners may find that their interior environment is mostly adequate, requiring only a little extra underfloor insulation to shore up defenses for the exposed surface. But however they address the problem, they should be grateful that an event as simple as a heatwave or a cold snap serves as a reminder of the need for occasional flooring maintenance. Once those concerns have been raised and addressed, the homeowner should be able to go back to not thinking about damage or repairs for as long as the home environment remains undisturbed.
