Bold Flooring Choices: Risk vs. Reward

As 2020 was ending, interior designers were getting the impression that trends in the year ahead would include bold, maximalist choices, particularly for carpets and other flooring options. If you want to follow that trend, Fedco Floor Services is happy to show you the most eye-catching colors and patterns in our catalog. But if one of them speaks to you, it’s a good idea for you to take a moment and make sure you’re ready to commit to it long-term.

Traditionally, homeowners in the Columbus area have tended toward more subdued flooring options, for a number of reasons. One of those reasons is just a general lack of adventurism. We welcome any trend that moves local design away from the decision to play it safe all the time. On the other hand, sometimes that lack of adventurism is grounded in real practical considerations. A bold choice is a risky choice, especially if you’re not sure about its longevity or its relationship to future design options.

Still, practicality shouldn’t hold you back too much. When it comes to maximalist flooring, you just have to be confident that it matches your overall design aesthetic. This blog has previously emphasized the role of flooring in leaving a first impression on visitors to a home. If you have a good sense of what that impression will be, you should be eager to reproduce it in every other element of your design. Your choice of flooring is quite literally the foundation for every other aspect of your décor. Walls and furnishings should match it exactly.

This is all the more important when you consider that flooring is usually more of an investment, and a more permanent change to your interior design. Certainly, you can count on Fedco Floor Services to tear out and replace your flooring as often as you want, but we don’t know a lot of Columbus residents who would willingly take on that much unnecessary cost and disruption to their lives. Most would prefer to choose a type of flooring that won’t get in the way of them redesigning other aspects of their interiors in subsequent years.

Bold carpets and tiles don’t need to have that effect. But when you select them for installation, you should be able to envision yourself enjoying them five years down the line, when you get bored with your other décor and you want to start changing things around. If you can’t imagine more than one way to decorate your house so it matches a bold flooring type, then maybe something more boring is better for you.
